Centre for Policy and Research on Turkey (Research Turkey) is an independent organisation devoted to policy analysis and research focussing primarily on contemporary Turkey. It aims at sharing a wide range of publication types including reviews, interventions, political, economic and social analyses, working papers, interviews and commentaries, by following interdisciplinary trends in the global world and examining Turkey and the global world from different points of view. Against the tendency to homogenise perspectives in the media and to reduce complex political and social reality to simplistic analysis, it welcomes theoretical and political pluralism to reach a more comprehensive, multi-sided understanding of contemporary Turkey in its global context.

And the best ‘black comedy’ award goes to Turkey! I could not believe the claims in this letter, a prosecutor asking the arrestee to tell his crime! 5 years in prison, in an isolation cell with no concerete accusation! I am wondering what those bashing the recent EU Progress Report will tell about these claims. If journalists do not feel safe in a country, no need to mention freedom and democracy!
Kimsesizlerin sesi oluyorsunuz. Bu üniversiteler artık aydın yetiştirmiyor mu derken bize umut verdiniz. Tebrikler. Kimsenin haksız yere suçlanıp hapislerde çürütülmediği, faili meçhullerin olmadığı, halkların kardeşçe yaşadığı, demokratik ve özgür bir Türkiye özlemiyle…
Çocuk bağırmış;”Baba bir hırsız yakaladım”.Baba;”Getir oğlum” demiş.Çocuk;”Gelmiyor baba”demiş.Baba”Bırak gitsin” demiş.Cevap gelmiş;”Gitmiyor baba”.Meğer hırsız çocuğu yakalamış!!.Ergenekon ve Balyoz davaları böyle davalar.Olmayan örgütten adamı 5 sene (Muhataplarını rahatsız eden kitaplar yazmaktan başka kanaatimce bir suçu olmayan Ergün Poyraz’ı 6 sene)hapsetmişsin.Şimdi içerde tutsan olmuyor,bıraksan olmuyor.Tam Tarzan(ve hempaları)güç durumda vaziyeti.
Please also see the ECHR decision on Ozkan’s application:
“The Court therefore finds that at the time of his arrest, even at the beginning of his detention the applicant was duly informed “of the legal and factual grounds of his arrest, so that [he] [could] discuss the legality in court “(Fox, Campbell
and Hartley, § and HB 40, § 49).”

‘Just a quick note’ is a good manipulator, that is why probably hides his/her identity, too. With the claims they put forward, ECHR stated Ozkan might be arrested. But, it did not make a verdict on whether Ozkan is guilty or not, or it did not mean Ozkan should be kept in prison for 5 years. Most of the stupid accusations directed towards Ozkan have been proved wrong such as carrying a gun with no licence or holding a grenade which turn out to be a pen rack!!! Prosecutors keep asking ‘why you did write this or why you did not write this’, trying journalism arbitrarily. If you arrest someone, you should have adequate evidence and charge the person quickly. You should not hold people in prison, and search for evidence after to convict people. Everybody knows Ozkan cannot be out at least before 2014 Presidential Elections!
This effort of blaming the nonpartisans is laughable. The ECHR decision (#15869/09- ECHR is a much better source than partisan newspapers) was in French. In short, it says ECHR can not make a decision because it is an ongoing case but it accepts the defendant’s appeal about the nonexistence of a domestic authority to object the arrest. During the search at Ozkan’s tv channel’s warehouse police found 2 oil lamps in the shape of grenades, forensic report says they’re candles but the state told ECHR that they found grenades at Ozkan’s home. A letter from The Norwegian Union of Journalists to the Turkish Embassy in Norway:

Dear Ambassador
The Norwegian Union of Journalists (NJ) represent close to 10 000 journalists in Norway and the Union is an affiliate of International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and Nordic Federation of Journalists. As you will know as The Turkish Ambassador to Norway, our democracy is based on a free and independent press as a crucial element.
It disturbs us deeply to notice that Turkey as our friend and allied currently have 76 journalists in prison awaiting trial on charges of violating the Turkish penal code or anti-terror laws as a result of their work as journalists.
We join EFJ and many other international human rights and press freedom organisations, the European institutions, the Council of Europe and the OSCE in their concern for the continuing serious situation of media freedom in Turkey.
As written in the European Commission Progress Report 2012: “The increasing incidence of violations of freedom of expression raise serious concerns, and freedom of the media continued to be further restricted in practice. The increasing tendency to imprison journalists, media workers and distributers fuelled these concerns. The European Court of Human Rights received a large number of applications concerning violations of freedom of expression by Turkey.”
NJ has as a contribution to the European journalists’ campaign for our imprisoned colleagues in Turkey adopted Tuncay Özkan. He is a detainee in his fifth year without a fair trial. The NJ branch in the mediagroup of The Norwegion Labour Organisation (LO Media) have also contributed by adopting Ramadan Pekgöz. He is a detainee since last December – also without charge or trial. It is a disgrace that the authorities of our friend and allied Turkey can let this happen.
We urge your Government to release all imprisoned journalists who are being held on the basis of their journalistic activities and halt the criminal prosecution of journalists in connection with their reporting and commentary.
We further urge the Government to halt the use of the anti-terror laws against journalists in contravention of Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
And we urge your government to end this climate of fear and intimidation facing Turkish journalists and to immediately reform the country’s legal system to protect journalists’ rights.
A free and independent press is never a threat to society; it’s the insurance for a healthy and true democracy.
Yours sincerely,
Elin Floberghagen

Avrupalı gazetecilerin Türkiye’deki tutuklu meslektaşları için başlattığı kampanyaya katılan NGS, Tuncay Özkan’a sahip çıkmıştır.
Elin Floberghagen
